strengths/weaknesses
Strengths: Salem's park system, containing over 300 acres of ground, and the recreation program are open to all. Centennial Park, roughly 35 acres, is located near the downtown area, and is the oldest park. Waterworth Memorial Park is 37 acres and provides baseball fields and large hills ideal for sled riding. Salem City Lake which covers 220 acres, is Salem's main water supply and also a source of recreation. There are several other small parks located throughout Salem. Several of these parks provide outdoor recreation for boating, fishing, hiking, playgrounds for children and picnic pavilions for families to enjoy the outdoors. With a low population density Salem is a wonderful place for recreational activities, experiencing the changing seasons, and enjoying the natural beauty of northeast Ohio.
Weaknesses: The former Nease Chemical facility is located in Columbiana County, Ohio, approximately 2.5 miles northwest of Salem. This former chemical facility has contaminated the environment with chlorinated benzene compounds, chlorinated ethenes, mirex, photomirex, and kepone, as well as other synthetic pesticides. Contamination from this facility traveled via Feeder Creek, a draining tributary of the facility, contaminating the soil, ground water and surface water. Restoration projects are in the planning stages to provide a broad scope of measurable ecological and ground water benefits to a wide range of fish and wildlife. Hopefully, with this restoration effort, the natural habitat functions which are self-sustaining and essential to maintain the habitat will be restored.
